Common questions

Things people ask before starting

If your question isn't here, reach out. No query is too small.

Accent modification (also called accent coaching) is a service for people who want to adjust features of their speech for personal or professional reasons. It differs from treating a disorder; there is nothing wrong with having an accent. A licensed SLP has the clinical expertise to guide phonetic change systematically and safely.
The number of sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. For dysphonia, most people complete therapy in 4–6 sessions, though some require additional sessions to meet their goals. Accent modification is typically 12 coaching sessions. After your evaluation, you'll receive a personalized plan with a clear estimate.
Overtone Speech & Voice Therapy, Inc. is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. All services are self-pay. Upon request, we can provide a superbill (an itemized receipt with diagnostic and procedure codes) that you may submit to your insurance carrier for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed and depends on your individual plan.
Yes. The majority of services are available via secure telehealth. Research supports the effectiveness of telepractice for both voice therapy and accent coaching. You'll need a quiet space, a reliable internet connection, and ideally a decent-quality headset.
A laryngoscopic exam by an ENT or laryngologist is required before starting voice therapy for dysphonia. This ensures structural pathology is ruled out and that therapy is appropriately targeted. We can refer you to a trusted colleague if you haven't seen one yet. Accent modification requires no referral.
